Zofran is part of a category of medications known as serotonin receptor-3 antagonists. Certain medical therapies can lead to feelings of nausea or vomiting—Zofran may help alleviate these symptoms.
Zofran is an antiemetic that functions by decreasing the activity of the vagus nerve, which usually activates the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata, and by blocking serotonin receptors that are stimulated by chemotherapy. It does not have an impact on motion sickness or on dopaminergic and muscarinic receptors.
Zofran is utilized to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with a variety of conditions: Chemotherapy-induced nausea; Hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy; Cyclic vomiting syndrome; Postoperative nausea.
